LES MENTETTES VUELVE A PRESENTAR “Songs for an Imaginary Film” (LP, 2011)

El nuevo disco fue grabado y producido por Les Mentettes en un estudio casero del barrio de Florida, mezclado por Mariano “Manza” Ezaín, masterizado por Eduardo Bergallo y cuenta con la participación de “Les Vientettes”, además de banjo, sitar, cellos y violas. La producción musical fue lograda en conjunto con Les Mentettes y los músicos invitados, con mucha experimentación y nuevos sonidos. A diferencia de los trabajos anteriores, Les Mentettes propone ahora un viaje hacia el interior de las emociones y las relaciones entre las personas a través de canciones que forman la “banda de sonido” de una película imaginaria de amor-errático. En los temas se encuentran situaciones de idas y vueltas amorosas, conflictos románticos, desde el enamoramiento, al hartazgo de la vida en pareja y de la incertidumbre al deseo sexual-apocalíptico.

El sucesor de “Let´s Mentettes” (LP 2008) y “Les Mentettes Orchestra” (LP 2010) se presentará el SAB 17 de Septiembre en Niceto Club con un banda invitada que luego anunciaremos.

La ambición y las ínfulas por crecer y evolucionar deberían ser una obligación en todo grupo de pop moderno que se precie. No sólo porque cuanto más miramos hacia atrás más experimentación y riesgo nos encontramos (la cima de todo aquello fue, sin duda, los ’60: la década de oro del pop y zona temporal en la que, con los escasos medios que existían, se fraguó el germen de lo que, en mayor o menor medida, acabaría sucediendo en décadas venideras) sino porque los grupos nuevos, al menos lo que a pop más o menos clásico se refiere, deberían aplicarse el cuento y la máxima del crecimiento como ítem supremo para toda una serie de acciones. Los argentinos Les Mentettes lo tenían claro desde el minuto uno de partido: su lucha no estaba en picar en el medio del campo, sino en el toque fino, cuidado, en no elevar la voz más de lo necesario, en aplicar un armazón solidario de (sic) orquesta elemental a sus piezas. Y lo han logrado. Si Let’s Mentettes fue el primer tiro al lince y su experimento Les Mentettes Orchestra (tres filas de músicos entre cuerdas vientos y rock clásico) agudizó más aún la vista, Songs for an Imaginary Film es un tratado maximalista de lo que debería ser el pop de altas pasiones y versiones de la evolución y, por supuesto, una respuesta en modo retrovisor activado a la época dorada del pop anglófono más clásico y romántico.

La limpieza post-tragedia de Cromañón a la que cierta renovación que, desde el indie, los grupos “nuevos” están sometiendo al trillado y cervecero rock argentino (el rock chabón o rock barrial que ha llenado estadios desde los ’90 a estos días) se agradece, y mucho. No porque la historia del pop argentino no haya trascendido, también, por finísimos experimentos exportables y que se entienden como totalmente esenciales para comprender el desarrollo de la canción en castellano posterior (Charly García, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Soda Stéreo, Virus, Los Abuelos de la Nada, Fricción), sino porque el anclaje de unas maneras tan propias e identificables como las del pueblo del sur ubicado del lado más lejano del Río de la Plata habían transformado una historia de buenos métodos eclipsados por una forma de hacer rock que limitaba el crecimiento de sus músicos (probablemente, de los mejores del mundo: así lo ha decidido el destino y su viaje y participación en escenas de todo el globo). Les Mentettes son los cabecillas de una escena mestiza que, en los ’90, lo intentó con gente como Suárez, Pez (aún en activo), Entre Ríos, Grand Prix y Jaime sin Tierra y que ha encontrado, desde hace unos pocos años, en grupos como Valle de Muñecas (after Menos que Cero), Viva Elástico, Alvy, Nacho y Rubín, Valentín y los Volcanes, Norma o Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado una serie de grupos que, más o menos partícipes del género pop con ambages maximalistas, han producido un lavado de cara que aún sigue en expansión y que ubica a los que aquí nos ocupan entre los cabecillas de un horno a presión que no deja de facturar enormes materiales.

Songs for an Imaginary Film quizá no sea precisamente eso (una banda bonora para una película imaginaria), pero sí un resumen de las conexiones con el pop clásico recuperado en los ‘90 (el que un día hicieron Belle & Sebastian, The Magnetic Fields o The Hidden Cameras), las orquestas de folk moderno (enevitable la comparación con Arcade Fire por el formato, las voces masculina y femenina y las evidentes conexiones con el folk orquestal), en mayor o menor medida algunos coletazos a un pop moderno de ínfulas puretas (The New Pornographers, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists o Neutral Milk Hotel) y, evidentemente, discos como el Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band de The Beatles o el Pet Sounds de The Beach Boys, clásicos incombustibles que en el tercer LP de Les Mentettes forman parte del catálogo de influencias más evidentes. La herencia orquestal huele desde que rompes el plástico del disco: una introducción con sitar (Facu Cruz al habla, ¿dígame?), arpa y banjo; cellos, violas, vientos de todo tipo, bombardino, flughelhorns y un sinfín de armonías vocales que pululan por un aire límpido, exacto, saneado de humos. Así lo demuestran tanto piezas de sinfonía septentrional como It’s Over o la inicial Broken Dream como auténticos hits de relojería suiza como la retro Suzanne, las más modernitas Don’t Make Me Over (¿lo mejor que ha parido Les Mentettes hasta la fecha?) o Ghost Girl (armonía beatle, delays, teclas livianas) o la resultona-rockabilly Ballad of Desperate Love. El futuro del pop argentino era esto. Y ni La 25 ni Jóvenes Pordioseros sabían contárnoslo. ¿Qué esperabais?
